When I went to Regal Cinema to watch Prabakaran, I was highly doubtful that it was a good movie- good in the sense of being artistic. I already knew that it was good in the story, message, and objective departments. I especially wanted to know what so pissed off the LTTE supporters in Chennai, India that they sent media freedom on a hike and beat the shit out of Thushara Peiris, the debutant director of the movie and hijacked the original copies of the movie.

My initial impression was that Thushara Pieris is trying to make a buck out of the current anti-terrorist and pro-military sentiment in the country by making a cheap movie and capitalizing and dramatizing the hijacking of the movie reels so as to increase the ticket sales. I remember, asking someone who had watched the movie, when it initially came out, about its quality. “Crap,” he said- “just a cheap movie- no point in watching”. But a few weeks back, my good friend Namal and fellow blogger posted a very nice and eloquent post on the movie and told me that all Sri Lankans should definitely go see it.

So after a lot of putting it off, I finally did see it yesterday.

Boy, was I glad to be proven wrong about my doubts!
It is an excellent movie.

The story flows smoothly from beginning to end and revolves around a pregnant would be suicide bomber living in a border village and her brother, Prabakaran, a child soldier with the LTTE. The movie explores topics that were, before this, conveniently or treacherously left out from most other movies that were set on the same background. It speaks of the suffering and insecurities in the border villages, the tolerance of the Sinhalease in accommodating Tamils amongst them (obvious to anyone living in Sri Lanka, but for some reason overlooked by everyone preaching harmony to us from outside), the forceful proscription and retention of child soldiers by the LTTE, the culture of hatred that propels the LTTE terrorist machine, the hoodwinking of NGO’s by the LTTE, the humane side of Sri Lankan soldiers, and more …

Movies like “Sudu Kalu Saha Alu”, “Ira Mediyama”, “Sulanga Enu Pinisa” were also set on the same theme and were “international recognized” and “critically acclaimed”. I watched “Sudu Kalu Saha Alu” and was utterly disgusted. Well, “Sudu Kalu Saha Alu” was cinematographically excellent, the story was convincing- at least to an outsider, say somebody sitting on the panel at an international film festival. But the spirit of that movie was plainly and hideously pro- LTTE. Pro-terrorist in the sense that it propagates the same beliefs and values that the LTTE terrorists want to propagate. One example that made an indelible sore impression on my mind from the movie “Sudu Kalu Saha Alu” was a murder scene committed in front of a Buddha Statue, with the statue prominently and symbolically highlighted.

Didn’t have the opportunity to see “Sulanga Enu Pinisa” but according to those who did, it is even worse than the other one.

I did watch “Ira Mediyama” and I should admit that it was an ok sort of film when you try be very objective, but it definitely had “this war against the terrorist is pointless, joining the army is a waste, the terrorists are humane …” kind of air about it. And watching it you get the impression that the director has his eyes on the international award and had forgotten his duty to his country…

Watching “Prabakaran” after all those other movies was like getting a breath of fresh air. Cinematography wise, there are a lot of places that would benefit from improvement- but Thushara definitely has his heart in the right place.

If you haven’t watched it, please do go and watch it…
Encourage Thushara and other directors like him to make more movies that takes the real picture of life in Sri Lanka to the world.
Spending an evening and watching the movie is the least you can do…

It just passed his 50th day of screening in Sri Lanka- so you probably would want to hurry before it is taken off. You can see it at: Regal Colombo, Lido Borella and many other theatres island wide.

If Mr. Thushara Pieris happens to read this post, well done and please, once the theatrical screening is over, release the movie as free divx video on the Net. That will take it to thousands of more viewers…

Anyways, I am back.
Obviously I wouldn’t be writing at the furious almost 1 post a day pace that I started out with. but at a more sedate and hopefully more maintainable pace. Say, 1 post a week …

A0 ප්‍රමාණයේ කඩදාසියක් කියන්නේ අපි සාමාන්‍යයෙන් පාවිච්චි කරන A4 කඩදාසි 16 ක ප්‍රමාණයක්. හරියටම කියනවානම් අඟල් 46.8 x අඟල් 33.1 ක ප්‍රමාණයක දිග පළලක්.

සාමාන්‍ය නිවාස සැලසුම් ආදිය මුද්‍රණය කරන තැනකින් (CAD printing) රුපියල් 325/= ක පමණ මුදලකට මෙය මුද්‍රණය කරගන්න පුළුවනි. මම මුද්‍රණය කලේ මොබිටෙල් ප්‍රධාන කාර්යාලය ලග තැනකින්.

The boy, apparently their leader, positions himself in the front and starts delivering a speech … “Mothers! Fathers! Brothers! Sisters! …”

They were university students- student activists to be exact- and the speech was about their struggle for “Saving Free Education”. They stated that the threat to free education is primarily from private universities.

They mentioned that while students with “three A grade passes at Advanced Level” are unable to get into a state university, students with rich parents, barely making through ALs, get into private universities and grab their jobs.

Solution to this problem, they said, is simple- “Ban private universities!”

They asked our help for their struggle. It is not just our struggle- they said- we are the voice of all current and future university students of Sri Lanka.

What they wanted from us was simple- buying a ten rupee sticker.

I brought one. Not because I approved of their struggle- but because not so long ago I too was a state university student.
Besides, the sticker was quite nice …

They got off and went away; probably to another bus, with their message and the ten rupee stickers.

But it got me thinking …

Is “Free Education” the same as “Education for Free”?

According to my current understanding, “Free Education” is the undeniable right of everyone to education without discrimination (on sex, age, ethnicity, language, religion, cast, disabilities etc.).

“Free education” is definitely not the same as “education for free”!

Providing “education for free” is an incentive for people to get educated- simply an investment on the human resource pool of the country.

The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is exemplary in that it provides “education for free” for every single school student. Our country/government spends a very large amount of money on this. But this is money well spent; as demonstrated by the high literacy rates of Sri Lankans.

Although our country/government provides education for free at the undergraduate level, Sri Lanka currently does not have enough resources to do this for every single student who qualified at AL and wishes to continue to undergraduate level.

But shouldn’t our country/government ensure the right to free education of the remaining larger student body as well?

It is to fill this void that our country/government has allowed private universities to be established.

Let’s look at an example.
Suppose all males in a particular country gets an education for free (without a fee) but females are prohibited from getting an education even if they are willing to pay through the roof for it.
Is this free education? No.

Let’s take another example. A certain countries government holds an exam at the end of a student’s schooling. Only the top 1% of the students who pass that exam are allowed to go into a university. All universities are run by the government, utilizing government funds. The remaining 99% have no way of getting a further education because the government can’t afford it. Private Universities funded through students payments are banned because of opposition by the state university students.
Is this free education? I think not!

But this is what those students I met in the bus are demanding …

In any case, what is wrong with offering “education at a fee” for those without access to “education for free”?

All state universities charge money for courses at postgraduate level. If private universities are accused of “selling degrees” shouldn’t state universities be also accused of “selling post graduate degrees”?

If private universities are banned like the students at the bus ask, wouldn’t it violate the free education right of the much larger student body who had passed ALs but can’t get in to a state university?

These students are intelligent enough to understand this simple fact. If so, what exactly are they fighting for?

They are largely fighting for the fear that they will have to compete for employment with students passing out of private universities.

Students from private universities tend to have better communication skills and better mastery of English. This probably could be because of their background, not because of any superiority at the private universities themselves. However, in some cases, the state university curriculum is more out of sync with the requirements of the industry than that of the private universities.
(It should be noted that this applies mostly to arts, science, management, economics and commerce students only- not to students of technical streams including medicine.)

But there is one important fact these students seem to overlook- “they already have competed with the private university students, and won!”

It is because of their superior skills and intelligence that they got selected for state universities in the first place … If they are ahead after ALs and behind after university, where could the problem be?

Maybe it is within the state universities themselves?

Trying to ban the private universities is an irrational, unreachable target.
If only these students direct their time and effort towards a rational, reachable target …

Clearly the target should be the improvement of the employable skill sets of each individual student and the continuous improvement of the quality and relevance of the education at state universities.

In practice, this improvement cannot be effected solely by the government. It can be done only with the help of lecturers at each individual university. This is because unlike in schools, what is being taught is largely dependent on what each individual university lecturer (or the department) deems appropriate. Each single lecturer at a state university has the power to effect a change within his scope- in his class, to his students.

Improving the quality and relevance of education at state universities is doable.
Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t even require multi-million dollar foreign loans.

What’s required is a commitment by each individual lecturer to affect the change within his sphere of influence plus a commitment by each individual student to reciprocate and motivate the lecturers.

ඔහු කියන විදියට තර්ජනය තිබෙන්නේ පෞද්ගලික වි‍ශ්ව විද්‍යාල වලින්. සමහර ශිෂ්‍යයන් “A” සාමාර්ථ තුනක් අරගෙනත් ජාතික විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයකට ඇතුල් වෙන්න බැරිව ඉදිද්දී “පොහොසතුන්ගේ දරුවන්”‍ යන්තම් උසස් පෙළ සමත් වෙලා පෞද්ගලික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල වලින් උපාධි අරගන්නා බවත්, ඔවුන් අපේ ජාතික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ‍වලින් එලියට එන දරුවන්ගේ රැකියා අවස්ථා පැහැරගන්නා බවත් ඔහු කීවා.

ඔහුට අනුව නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය සුරකින්න නම් පෞද්ගලික වි‍ශ්ව විද්‍යාල තහනම් කළ යුතුයි!!!!

වර්තමාන හා අනාගත ලංකා දූ පුතුන් වෙනුවෙන් ඔවුන් ගෙන යන අරගලයට ආධාර දෙන්නයි ඔහු බසයේ සිටි අයගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටි‍යේ.
ඉල්ලුවේ පොඩි උදව්වක්- රුපියල් දහයේ ස්ටිකර් එකක් ගන්න කියලා.

මාත් ගත්තා එකක්, ඔවුන් කී කරුණු වලට එකග වූ නිසා නොවේ, මාත් කලකට පෙර සරසවි සිසුවෙක් ව සිටි නිසා.
සිතන්ට යමක් ඉතිරි කර ඔවුන් බසයෙන් බැස ගියා…

“නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය” කියන්නේත් “‍නොමිලේ අධ්‍යාපනය” කියන්නෙත් එකක්මද?

මගේ අවබෝධයට අනුව “නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය” යනු ඕනෑම කෙනෙකුට කිසිම බේදයකින් (ස්ත්‍රී/පුරුෂ, බාල/මහළු, ජාතිය භාෂාව හා ආගම, කුලය, අංග විකලතාවයන්, … ) හෝ බාධාවකින් තොරව ඕනෑම ‍විෂයක් ගැන අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා ගැනීමට ඇති අයිතියයි.

“නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය” කියන්නේ “‍නොමිලේ අධ්‍යාපනය” ම නොවේ !!!

ශ්‍රී ලංකා ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රික සමාජවාදී ජනරජයේ ඇති උසස්තම ප්‍රතිපත්තියක්, සෑම ළමයෙකුටම නොමිලයේ උසස් පෙළ දක්වාම පාසල් අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා දීමට පහසුකම් සැපයීම‍.
අපේ රට/රජය මේ සදහා ඉතා විශාල මුදලක් වියදම් කරනවා.
අපි සාක්ෂරතාවය අතින් ලෝකයේ ඉදිරියෙන්ම සිටින්නටත් එය එක හේතුවක්.

උපාධි මට්ටමේ දී උසස් පෙළ සමත් සෑම ළමයෙකුටම නොමිලයේ අධ්‍යාපනය ලබාදීමට තරම් ‍සම්පත් අප රට සතුව නැහැ.
එනිසා උසස් පෙළ සමත් සිසුන්ගෙන් ඉතා කුඩා ප්‍රතිශතයකටයි සරසවි වරම් ලබා දිය හැක්කේ.

ඒත්, උසස් පෙළ සමත් නමුත් සරසවි වරම් නැති සිසුන්ගේ ද “නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපන අයිතිය” සුරකින්නට අවශයයි නේද?

ඒ අඩුව පුරවන්නටයි පෞද්ගලික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල බිහිවුනේ‍.

නොමිලයේ අධ්‍යාපනය අහිමි සිසුන්ට පෞද්ගලික අංශ මගින් මිලකට අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා දීමේ ඇති වැරැද්ද කුමක් ද?

රජයේ විශ්ව විද්‍යාල සෑම එකකම පශ්චාත් උපාධි මට්ටමේ දී මුදල් අය කරනවා.
පෞද්ගලික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල “උපාධි විකුණනවා නම්” රජයේ සෑම විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයක්මත් “පශ්චාත් උපාධි විකුණනවා” යි චෝදනා කරන්නට පුළුවනි නේද?

බසයේ දී හමුවූ සිසුන් කියන පරිදි පෞද්ගලික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල තහනම් කිරීමෙන් වෙන්නේ “උසස් පෙළ සමත් එහෙත් සරසවි වරම් නැති සිසුන්ගේ” නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපන අයිතිය අහෝසි කිරී‍මක් නොවේද?

අනිවාර්යයෙන් මේ කරුණ තේරුම් ගැනීමට තරම් ඔවුන් බුද්ධිමත් …
එසේනම් ඔවුන් මේ සටන් කරන්නේ කුමක් සදහාද?

පෞද්ගලික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල සිසුන් ගේ වඩා හොද ඉංග්‍රීසි බස හැසිරවීම, වඩා හොද අන්තර් සන්නිවේදන හැකියාව හා ‍සමහර අවස්ථා වලදී රැකියාවට වඩාත් අදාළ අධ්‍යාපනයක් ලැබීම ආදිය හේතුවෙන් ඔවුන් හා තරග කිරීමේදී ජාතික සරසවි සිසුන් යම් පසුබෑමකට ලක්වෙනවා.

දිනූ නිසා නොවැ ඔවුන් ජාතික සරසවි වරම් ලැබුවේ …

උසස් පෙළ දී ඉදිරියෙන් සිට රැකියා සෙවීමේදී පස්සට යනවානම් වැරද්ද ඇත්තේ කොතැනකද‍?

විශ්ව විද්‍යාලය තුළ වන්නට පුළුවනි.

පෞද්ගලික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල තහනම් කිරීමට උත්සාහ කිරීම වැරදි, ළඟාවිය නොහැකි ඉලක්කයක්. මට බසයේදී හමුවූ සිසුන් හා ඔවුන් නිරූපනය කරන සිසු කුලකය ඒ කාලය හා ශ්‍රමය නිවරැදි, ළඟාවිය හැකි ඉලක්කයක් කරා යොදවනවානම් …

පැහැදිළිවම ඉලක්ක කල යුත්තේ ඒ ඒ සිසුවාගේ ස්වයං වර්ධනයත්, ජාතික විශ්ව විද්‍යාල තුළ අධ්‍යාපනයේ “ගුණාත්මක හා අදාළත්වතාවයේ” සංවර්ධනයකුත් ඇති කර ගැනීමයි.

ප්‍රායෝගිකව ඒ වෙනස ඇති කිරීමට හැකියාව ඇත්තේ රජයට නොව ඒ ඒ විශ්ව විද්‍යාල වල ආචාර්ය මණ්ඩල වලටයි. මන්ද යත්, පාසල් තුළ මෙන් නොව විශ්ව විද්‍යාල වල අධ්‍යාපනයේ දී උගන්වන්නේ කුමක්ද යන්න තීරණය කරන්නේ ආචාර්යවරුන් විසින්ම බැවින්.

එය කළ නොහැක්කක් නොවේ.
‍ඒ සදහා රුපියල් මිලියන ගණනින් විදේශ ආධාර ද අවශ්‍ය නොවේ.

අවශ්‍ය වන්නේ විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ආචාර්ය වරුන් වෙතින් පුද්ගල මට්‍ටමෙන් කැපවීමක් හා ශිෂ්‍යයන් මගින් ආචාර්ය වරුන් තුළ ඒ පිළිබඳ උනන්දුවක් ඇති කිරීමකුත් පමණයි.

අනික් දිශාවට ධාවනය වන තවත් රථයක් …

දෙවැනි රථයේ රියදුරා තම වාහනයේ ඉදිරි ලාම්පු මොහොතකට දල්වා ඉදිරියෙන් එන වාහන වලට යම් සංඥාවක් දෙයි.

එසේ හොද දේ කිරීමට දිරි දීම වඩාත් ධාර්මික සමාජයක් කරා අප යන ගමනට අත් වැලක්.

Over the years, there were a few other columns in various news papers on similar themes. Unfortunately, this has not at all been enough. The occasional positive ripples created by these stories sadly get lost in the sea of negative stories and idle celebrity gossip that our media constantly bombards us with.

We need to see and hear more and more about the good side of our people. It will inspire others to “do good” in similar situations and will eventually contribute to the strengthening of the moral fiber of our society.

කවදාවත් උපන් දින වැඩි විශේෂත්වයකින් සැලකූ කෙනෙක් නොවේ මම. ඒත් උපන් දිනය කියන්නේ ජීවිතයේ අපි ඉන්න තැන ගැන මදකට නැවතිලා හිතා බලන්න අවස්ථාවක් ලෙස මම සලකනවා. ජීවිතයේ මෙතෙක් කළ නොකළ හා ඉදිරියට කළයුතු දේ ගැන මෙනෙහි කරන්න මේ අවස්ථාවක්.

අපි හැමදාමත් මෙතන ඉන්නේ නැහැ. අද හෝ දශක කීපයකින් හෝ අප කාගේත් ආයු හමාර වෙනවා. ඉන් පස්සෙ වෙන හෝ නොවෙන දේ ගැන අපි මොනවා විශ්වාස කලත් මම හිතන්නේ අපි හැමෝම එක දෙයක් ගැන එකඟ වෙනවා; ජී‍වත් වෙලා ඉන්න කාලය ඉතා වැදගත් බව. අනිවාර්යයෙන් ම අපි ලද මිනිසත් බවෙන් උපරිම ප්‍රයෝජන ගත යුතුයි!
